THE Fremantle Dockers brought the glittering career of its most decorated player Matthew Pavlich to an end with victory over the finals-bound Western Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon.
The Dockers ensured there was no repeat of the disappointing form that marred Pavlich’s 350th game against Sydney – one the port city club lost by 15 goals – by beating the Bulldogs by 20 points in a low scoring encounter at Subiaco Oval.
Pavlich scored his 700th career goal in the opening quarter but could not deliver a final-quarter roof-raiser and finished with 1.3 for the afternoon.
It mattered little, with the Dockers triumphing 10.9 (69) to 6.13 (49) to perfectly end Pavlich’s 353-game, 17- season career.
Teammate Lachie Neale collected a game-high 36 disposals to set a new AFL record for possessions in a season. In a fitting coincidence, Neale took the baton from former record holder Matthew Boyd.
Boyd, who now finds himself as an important cog in the Bulldogs’ defence, racked up 35 disposals on Sunday.
