Around the Home: Southern River artist excited for new exhibition

Ben SmithComment News

IT has been a long time coming, but artist Willemina Foeken is excited at the imminent opening of her new exhibition.

Foeken has banded together Shirley Winstanley, Irene Osborne, Georgia Efford and Mary Cowell, to exhibit roughly 50 paintings at the Zig Zag Gallery in Kalamunda from April 28 onwards.

The Southern River resident said the group had been working hard on planning the exhibition for some time, but had enjoyed every moment and were ecstatic opening day was almost upon them.

“The idea of exhibiting together is so motivational and inspires us to do more work. It has given us a whole new lease of life,” she said.

“It’s been a lot of work, we’ve enjoyed it, but it’s been like running a business.”

Foeken said the group had meetings and painting sessions in her studio to aid their creativity and help focus on their exhibition theme of ‘Around the Home’.

“We thought it was a good idea to do the same subject at times in order to get something related, it was nice to have the same theme or paint the same subject,” she said.

“We chose ‘Around the Home’ because it’s fairly broad. We have one lady who paints vases of roses and other flowers, I do people and wildflowers and another lady does mostly landscape and life drawing.”
