Electra vies for queen title

‘After looking at my photos and previous work, they (Queens of the Galaxy) selected me,’ she said.

Just 21-years-old, Electra was introduced to drag by a friend who sent a video suggesting she (then Daniel) should take a look.

‘I was 17 and didn’t even know what a drag queen was,’ she said.

‘I’ve always loved performing and when I saw what went into it and the performance side of things, I knew I wanted to do it.’

Electra will be the youngest drag queen in Queens of the Galaxy, held in Darwin, and said it was nerve-racking going up against such talented people, some of whom have been performing for 20 to 30 years.

But with her music already organised and kangaroo paw inspired dress being made in the eastern states, Electra feels confident she will have something original to show the crowd.

‘I try to be different to other drag queens and give something new to the audience,’ she said.

‘I want people to say ‘I never thought I’d see a drag queen do that’.’

Working a day job as Daniel and performing as Electra by night can be hard work, but Electra believes it gives her the best of both worlds. ‘It can be a bit much but I’m very passionate about drag,’ she said.

‘It’s an amazing feeling knowing that you’re doing something you enjoy doing and people enjoy watching.

‘You’re taking the audience away from whatever’s going on in their personal life and ensuring they have a good night.’

While the thought of winning the competition is overwhelming for Electra, she said she was looking forward to it being a rewarding experience.

‘I’d love to drag fulltime, it’s something that once you get started, you never want to stop,’ she said. ‘If I did (win), I think my make-up would run on the stage.’
