But people are being warned to consult the gift recipient first to avoid pets being dumped or taken back as they don’t want or know how to care for them.
The Animal Protection Society of WA, which is based in Southern River, has a number of unwanted pets every year.
Vice president Melanie Jackson said August and September tend to be the bigger months for pets being dumped.

READ NOW“It happens every day,” she said of pets being dumped.
“I don’t think people realise what is involved with caring for a pet.”
She said it was best to consult the person before buying them a pet.
“The connection between a person and an animal is with the person not the person buying it. If a person has a Jack Russell, doesn’t mean they want another one,” she said.
The society is a not-for-profit refuge for homeless cats and dogs that cares for abandoned animals while finding them a loving home and owner.
The society has 24 kennels for dogs and can house about 65 cats and 45 kittens at one given time.
Ms Jackson said another issue they face around Christmas is people getting their pets into a kennel when they go on holidays meaning the society can get full very quickly.
She said people should also consider looking at rescue dogs as their next pet.
“I think a lot of people think something is wrong with rescue dogs. Some of best dogs you will find are rescue dogs.”
