BEDFORDALE’S Carolyn Richer has won first place at the Armadale Writers’ Awards.

Ms Richer took out the competition from more than 100 entries with her story Derailment, winning her $1000.

Second place went to Ellenbrook’s Karen Taylor, while Lesmurdie’s Peta Shaw took out third.

City of Armadale mayor Henry Zelones said the state wide competition had been a big hit with budding writers.

“This is the second year that the City has run the competition and we are thrilled to see the amount of interest it has attracted, particularly in its early days,” he said.

“Literary competitions such as this are important for amateur writers and it proves we have an abundance of aspiring writers choosing to submit their work to our competition.

“As news of the competition reaches further afield, through writers groups and word of mouth, we anticipate that we will get more interest each year.”
