THREE mates are preparing to embark on a week-long off road adventure across the wild expanses of Australia’s red centre-all in the name of charity.
Lesmurdie couple Ben and Tara Thomas and their friend David Gibson from Byford are just days away from jumping in their 2013 Toyota Prado and joining a convoy of 20 vehicles travelling from Kalgoorlie to Uluru as part of this year’s Variety 4WD Challenge.
Now in its 22nd year, the event will take participants through the West MacDonnell Ranges and Kings Canyon on their journey to the sacred rock, with each car raising thousands to help sick, disadvantaged or special needs children.

“We were drawn to Variety because of the great work they do supporting the sick and disadvantaged kids,” he said.
“We have had a couple of friends that have had children with health complications and knowing that there are charities out there like Variety to assist means a lot.
“I haven’t really done a lot of four wheel driving so I am looking forward to getting out on the tracks to see what they have to offer, but I think the best part will be seeing parts of Australia that not a lot of people get to see with a really great crew of guys.”
The Variety 4WD Challenge leaves Kalgoorlie on May 27.
