Byford superhero takes on Nullarbor in Variety Bash to help sick kids

TO some, the thought of Captain America driving from Perth to Fremantle via Kalgoorlie may seem like a set up to a joke.

But to Terry Mellor, it was all part of the fun of the Variety Bash, Australia’s longest running motoring fundraising event.

This year, the Byford resident, along with his neighbour Dave Gibson and his nephew Richard Mellow, opted for his 1965 Ford Galaxy to undergo an Avengers-themed makeover.

As a result, the trio donned the costumes of their caped crusaders of choice – Captain America, The Hulk and Thor – for the event.

Mr Mellor, who returned for his 11th Bash after a year off last year, said it was his fellow fundraisers who kept him coming back.

“I’ve made some fantastic friends and lifelong acquaintances from the bash, something I didn’t expect to have,” he said.

“The people who are involved are absolutely fantastic; they give their heart and soul for the kids and for each other. We’re a close-knit group.”

While it may seem like fun and games, Mr Mellor said breakdowns always tested the drivers mentally.

“We’ve lost wheels, broken axles and broken the oil pump, we’ve lost transmission out in the Nullarbor,” he said.

“The biggest trip we’ve ever done was Sydney to Perth. We picked up some dirt in the transmission; it got worse and worse until the point where we snapped the shaft.”

Mr Mellor said the positives far outweighed the negatives and encouraged people to sign up for next year’s event.

“We used to have 75 cars in the event; now we’re down towards 30, but it’s a magnificent charity we do it for and a magnificent event,” he said.
