City of Gosnells active on environment

The City announced work had officially begun on a four-year $400,000 plan to rejuvenate Yule Brook and the wetlands surrounding Mills Park in Beckenham.

Around 10,000 plants will be planted as part of the City’s wetland management plan for the park.

Riparian species have been selected based on nearby references, such as the Brixton Street Wetlands, to create a plant range similar to what would have naturally grown at the site hundreds of years ago.

This understorey planting will complement the many existing marri, flooded gums and paperbark trees at the venue.

Earlier this year, Mills Park was awarded an Australian-first six-star Public Building as Built certified project, recognising it as one of Australia’s most energy efficient.

It already has a Six-Star Green Star rating for its design.

Mayor Olwen Searle said the City was determined to maintain Mills Park’s eco-friendly reputation.

“As a leading example of environmental sustainability, it is fitting that such a comprehensive approach has been taken to this wetland rehabilitation project,” she said.

In addition, the City also announced last week it had salvaged 100 native Australian trees as part of its redevelopment of Southern River Road.

The City paid $18,000 to relocate the grasstrees from a property in Maddington before its development.

Following four days of work to remove the trees, they were planted in the median strip on Southern River Drive between Ranford Road and Aldenham Drive.

The tree planting marked one of the last stages of the City’s $14 million upgrades to Southern River Road, headlined by a dual carriageway extending from Ranford Road to Holmes Street.
