Ben SmithComment News

CRIME and more facilities loom as key issues for prospective City of Gosnells council candidates.

Ahead of the October 21 election, safety, crime prevention and increased community facilities were the most common priorities for council candidates.

With Mayor Olwen Searle up for re-election alongside deputy mayor Julie Brown and councillors David Goode and Bill Wiffen, it promises to be an interesting vote.

Numerous candidates expressed an interest in implementing new measures to prevent crime and ensure the safety of the residents.

Given Gosnells, Thornlie and Canning Vale were named among the top 10 worst performing suburbs for home burglary insurance claims by the RAC this year, it is unsurprising it figures as a high priority.

Many other candidates were also keen to build new and improve current community facilities through the City, especially for youths and the elderly.

Local parks was another popular topic, with candidates hoping to pitch in to the City’s Public Open Space strategy, which is currently in full swing.

The revitalisation of the Gosnells town centre has long been a hot topic and was considered a priority by some council hopefuls.

The long-awaited Canning Vale train station on Nicholson Road, due to open in 2021, was also a point of interest, with candidates wanting to ensure the surrounding infrastructure best benefits the community.
