Gosnells council to review multi-ward system

THE City of Gosnells will review whether to introduce the multi-ward system back into the City.

Councillors gave it the green light at the November 24 ordinary council meeting.

The submission is asking the Council to undertake a review to determine if the City should be divided into wards and if so, what the ward boundaries should be, and the number of councillors there should be for each ward.

The one-ward system was adopted in 2009. The debate to bring back wards was brought to Council after former councillor Michael Devereux presented a petition with 250 signatures in September earlier this year.

In the petition, Mr Devereux said many residents felt it would be better to have a “truly local ward system”.

Councillor Ron Mitchell said the City already had a ward system – one

He and councillor Terresa Lynes voted against the report being done by the council.

Councillor Glenn Dewhurst said he wanted a very detailed report with all the bases covered.

“I want to see the pros and cons of having one, two, three or more wards,” he said.

But he said he was also concerned how much money it would cost to undertake the review and wanted the job to be done thoroughly and properly.
