Death in Canning Vale: Woman charged with teen’s murder

Matt ZisComment News

THE 20-year-old woman accused of murdering teenager Jacob Cummins and attempting to murder four of his friends in Canning Vale last Thursday faces Christmas behind bars, awaiting trial.

Aya Hishmeh cast a broken figure during her first court appearance on Saturday morning, where she was asked if she understood the five charges police had laid the previous day.

She had to be physically assisted into and out of the dock by courtroom staff and sobbed into her hands as she answered “yes” when asked if she understood the most serious charge.

Her grief-stricken father, who was in court with other family members, was also in tears and called out “we love you bubba, we all love you”. He too needed help to leave the court after his daughter’s brief appearance, which lasted just 10 minutes.

Ms Hishmeh was remanded in custody until January 31, but was told she could seek legal advice to consider applying for bail ahead of that date.

Police allege Ms Hishmeh was driving the car that struck Jacob (17) and fellow teenagers Anwre Ige, Robert Bell, Augustine Janga and Mark Kickett as they walked along Eucalyptus Boulevard on Thursday afternoon.

She will next appear in Stirling Gardens Magistrates Court.
