Dragon boats churn up Champion Lakes in Chung Wah festival

DRAGON boats swooped around Champion Lakes earlier this month for the 2017 Chung Wah Dragon Boat Festival.

More than 1,000 people attended the family friendly event, which returned to Perth last year after a 10 year break.

The traditional festival occurs on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar and is celebrated by Chinese communities around the world.

“The dragon boat race is one example of the many wonderful Chinese cultural community celebrations given to us by the Chung Wah Association – WA’s oldest ethnic association,” Citizenship and Multicultural Interests Minister Paul Papalia said.

“Chinese cultural celebrations, such as this dragon boat race, are an opportunity for everyone to enjoy and learn about Chinese culture, which is a rich and colourful part of our community.”

The annual event is supported by the state government with a $5,000 grant from the Office of Multicultural Interests.
