Fake fines malware risk

A SCAM email that masquerades as a traffic fine can infect computers with malware when the user clicks on the link, according to the Australian Federal Police.

The latest scam email asks the recipient to pay an $150 federal police fine.

If the user clicks the links, the computer could be infected with malware, which disables the device.

Police said ransomware was then activated and the recipient was asked to pay thousands of dollars to reactivate their computer.

They are warning anyone who receives the email to delete it immediately.

The Australian Federal Police do not use emails to send out traffic infringement notices.

The fake email comes from addresses like TrafficInfringement.afp.org, TrafficInfringement.afp.com or similar.

Police said people who think they have received a scam email should report it here
