WA Police have charged former Labor Darling Range MLA Barry Urban with fraud.

Mr Urban has been charged by the Major Fraud Squad with five counts of uttering a forged document, attempted fraud, forging a record and five counts of giving false evidence before a Parliamentary Committee.

Police said the five counts of uttering a forged document and attempted fraud and forging a record relate to materials and information that he allegedly provided during applications involving WA Police Force.

Mr Urban was arrested and charged today and he will appear in court at a later date.

The maximum penalty for these offences is seven years imprisonment.

Mr Urban quit the Labor Party last November and resigned from Parliament in May, after allegations were made he had lied about his education and work experience.

A Parliamentary inquiry into Mr Urban led to police launching a criminal investigation.
