About 100 landowners gathered at Kalamunda Town Hall recently to discuss the Draft Hills Rural Study examining the issues that the Hills area faces, which the Shire of Kalamunda is conducting.
The forum included Department of Agriculture and Food WA, Department of Fire and Emergency Services and shire planning officers.
Orchardists asked questions and discussed issues affecting them.
Third-generation orchardist John Gregorovich said because of pressures on growers, he would leave the area whether there was sub-division or not.
‘We don’t know if there is a future for fruit growers any more,’ he said.
Canning Mills grower Danny Dimarco said there would not be any industry or investment for fruit growers unless the issue of suitable pesticides for fruit fly was resolved.
‘The fruit is spoiled before we can pick it,’ he said.
Submissions on the study are open until February 14. Visit www.kalamunda.wa.|gov.au/Public-Comment/|2013/Draft-Hills-Rural-Study.
