THE “Godfather of Italian cuisine” Antonio Carluccio made an appearance at gourmet deli Napoli Mercato in Harrisdale on Saturday.

Carluccio, founder of the Carluccio’s restaurants and Jamie Oliver’s former boss, was promoting his new cookbook, Vegetables.

The renowned chef, co-star of the BBC’s Two Greedy Italians show, signed copies of the book and posed for pictures with fans.

Napoli Mercato owner Louie Napoli said they were delighted to host the visit.

“A mutual friend said Antonio was coming to Australia and I said ‘I’d love to have him in the shop’ and we organised it from there,” he said.

“He’s an icon in our industry.”

Mr Napoli said while Carluccio planned to cook some of his own dishes, the demand to see him meant the store had to come up with an alternative.

“It was overwhelming, the response we had, so some of our chefs in store cooked recipes from his book for customers to taste.”
