THEY may have just celebrated their 77th anniversary together, but Fred and Joan Whittaker are still going strong.

The couple married each other in Kent on August 3 in 1942, before they moved to Australia in 1958.

Their son Graham Whittaker said his father had to ask for temporary leave from the army to marry his mother.

“The war was still on then, they only had a couple of nights together before dad was going back and reporting for duty,” he said.

“They had to save up ration stamps for sugar and butter for the wedding cake,” he said.

Having spent time in Gosnells after they migrated from England, the happy couple are back in the area and currently reside in Amaroo Village Buckley Caring Centre.

Mr Whittaker said despite their age, his parents were still happy and enjoying life.

“They’ve done pretty well, they still feel well, and they’re still pretty with it,” he said.
