Ben SmithComment News

CITY of Gosnells has announced the installation of a multi-sports area at Jean Garvey Park in Gosnells.

The outdoor fitness facilities will include basketball courts and will complement the park’s current facilities, which include a skate park and The Shack youth centre.

Local youths were involved in the consultation process and provided input to ensure the multi-sport equipment would meet their needs.

The City’s Youth Services team now plans to host regular activities at the site, including a ‘Streetball’ basketball competition.

The City provided $18,000 in funding, while the Federal Government’s Stronger Communities Programme grant provided $16,000.

Chief executive Ian Cowie said the new facilities would further boost the park’s usage.

“In 2014, there were around 30 young people attending programs at Jean Garvey Park each week and at the end of last financial year, this number had increased to around 125 a week,” he said.

“With this increased attendance and the provision of additional engagement activities, the new multi-sports court will further enhance the facility, continuing to make it attractive to young people.”
