Infected by tick bite

Sarah WatersComment News

LYME disease (Borrelia burgdorferi) is a bacterial infection caused by a tick bite.

The bacteria enters the bloodstream and in the early stages, some patients will display a distinctive bulls-eye rash, headaches and flu-like symptoms.

If left untreated, it can develop into a multi-systemic illness with symptoms ranging from chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia to severe physical and mental impairment.

The bacteria can hide itself in cells and is often confused with multiple sclerosis, diabetes, Parkinson's and other mainstream illnesses.

Lisa Blondell said there were more than 600 confirmed Lyme cases in WA.

She will hold a Family Trivia Night this Thursday at Forrestfield Library, 3 Salix Way, Forrestfield from 6pm to raise money for the support of Australians with Lyme disease. Cost is $10. Kids under 10 free.
