At Wednesday’s council meeting, councillors authorised chief executive Joanne Abbiss to apply to intervene in State Administrative Tribunal proceedings between Rocla Pty Ltd and the Shire over land bordering Wellard.
The City has long opposed sand mining at 6 Banksia Road and lots 300 and 301 Boomerang Road in support of the community’s concerns it would increase traffic and affect local amenities.
Kwinana has instructed its lawyers to intervene in the SAT proceedings.
Cr Sandra Lee said the sand mine would have a huge impact on the community.

At its September 2013 meeting, the council considered a report opposing proposed sand mines on the reserves.
As the application had not been determined within 60 days by the Shire, the proponent of the sand mine initiated a review of the application to the tribunal. Under the tribunal’s guidelines, the City must show it has a sufficient interest in the matter to become a third party in the proceedings.
