Man charged over leaving baby in vehicle

A MAN has been charged after allegedly leaving a three-month-old baby in a vehicle while he went inside a shopping centre yesterday.

Police said a 35-year-old man drove to Armadale Shopping City on Jull Street and parked in the undercover carpark at about 4.25pm.

It is alleged the man left the vehicle’s front window slightly open while his three-month-old baby boy was in a child seat behind the driver seat, as he went inside the shopping centre.

It is further alleged he did not return to the car until just before 5pm.

Police said a member of the public heard the baby crying at about 4.35pm and opened the rear door to allow more air before calling police.

When police attended, they removed the baby, who felt quite hot, from the vehicle.

The baby was taken to hospital by ambulance and he has been released after being assessed.

The 35-year-old man from Armadale is being charged by summons with leaving a child unsupervised in vehicle.

He will appear in court at a later date.

The penalty for this offence is liable to imprisonment for five years or a summary conviction penalty of a fine of $36,000 and imprisonment for three years.
