The new station will be built on Mundijong Road, providing easy access to Tonkin Highway once the extension is complete, and will be large enough to accommodate up to 30 police officers.
Darling Range MLA Tony Simpson said the current Mundijong police station on Anstey Street was built in the 1960s and was no longer suitable.
‘It is made up of a number of demountable buildings, stuck onto the rear of the old station with no lock-up facilities,’ he said.
‘My electorate has grown very quickly over the last couple of years and it is important that necessary infrastructure is provided to keep up with this growth.’
A demand for further police services in Mundijong and surrounding areas is expected as population, land development and tourism increases.
Mr Simpson has been pushing for a new police station to be built since 2005, with acquisition of the land taking place last month.
It will include a holding cell, charge room and police gymnasium.
Offenders who are caught in Mundijong and surrounding areas are currently taken to Armadale police station’s lock-up facilities.
