Perth: Southeastern politicians back pay freeze as ‘necessary’

Jessica NicoComment News

THREE local politicians have thrown their support behind a State Government decision to freeze their pay until 2021.

The Salaries and Allowances Amendment (Debt and Deficit Remediation) Bill 2017 passed through the Legislative Assembly recently.

It not only applies to all Members of Parliament, including the Premier and his ministers, but also to senior positions within the government, including the Governor, clerks, magistrates and government chief executives.

Premier Mark McGowan said the pay freeze was expected to save $16 million.

Armadale MLA Tony Buti, Southern River MLA Terry Healy and Thornlie MLA Chris Tallentire said the freeze was necessary to repair the Budget.

“It is important that we all share the burden to help fix the Budget,” Mr Healy said.

“As we are asking the community to assist with Budget repair, I think it is appropriate that we as elected representatives do the same ourselves.”

Mr Tallentire said: “Pay freezes are real for people in Gosnells, Maddington and Thornlie and as MPs we need to help fix the mess too.”

“In asking public servants to show wage restraint, it is only fair and reasonable for WA Parliamentarians to do likewise,” Mr Buti said.
