‘Tony Simpson has the power to force shire amalgamations, so we have to work to make sure we do the right thing by the ratepayers,’ he said.

The Darling Downs Residents Association president said the Tonkin Highway extension, the development of an industrial park, a regional sporting complex and a large shopping precinct in Byford were also high priorities.

‘It is time to get things moving in the shire. I am for progress, jobs and growth while maintaining the lifestyle,’ he said.

The shire was the only council in Comment News’ readership area to elect new leaders last week ” the cities of Gosnells and Armadale mayors Dave Griffiths and Henry Zelones were re-elected, as were their deputies Ron Mitchell and Ruth Butterfield.

Cr Zelones thanked fellow councillors for their confidence.

He said it was probably going to be a ‘tough and gruelling’ couple of years, but the council would work together to achieve the best for the community.

Cr Griffiths said he would like to see Gosnells continue with its beautification strategy to improve public spaces, and encourage people to take pride in their community.
