Retailers want adult shop to stay out of mall

Staff ReporterComment News

The shop is currently under construction, but neighbouring retailers want it to stay out of the family-friendly shopping precinct.

Restaurant owner Harpreet Singh opened his food outlet three months ago and said having an adult shop next door would drive customers away.

‘It’s embarrassing for us,’ he said.

‘It will affect our customers, especially in summer. Everyone will want to sit outside, but they can’t ” they’ll be looking right into the window.’

Danielle Lange, an employee from Herb Craft, which is directly next door to the adult shop, said the shop was originally based in Armadale Shopping Centre, before it moved to Jull St Mall.

She said it had no place on the street.

‘We moved here 12 months ago because we were told by the council this area is being refurbished,’ she said.

‘People are not going to want to bring their children past a sex shop. It doesn’t fit the image.’

City of Armadale councillor Guenter Best said he was concerned about the presence of an adult shop in the mall.

‘It’s not good for the image of Armadale, especially with all the work we’re doing to attract families to the mall,’ he said.

The Comment News contacted the City of Armadale to confirm details about the shop, but there was no comment before this paper was printed.
