A multicultural choir featuring people from 10 countries will perform at the City of Gosnells’ Fusion Food and Culture Festival.

The Salad Bowl Choir was formed when a group of people who attended William Langford Community House in Langford were invited to share their expressions of diversity.

The group contains members from Singapore, Malaysia, India, Sri Lanka, China, Taiwan, Myanmar, the Philippines, Japan and Australia, sing in English, Indonesian, Japanese, Malay, Mandarin and Tamil, play traditional instruments and perform cultural dances.

They recently performed to more than 300 delegates at the Linkwest Conference and have been invited to perform thoughout metropolitan Perth and regional WA.

Sandra Krempl helped set up the choir and said it was a joy to see them express their culture through music.

“It’s a group who meets because they love doing what they do, it gives them a sense of purpose and it brings so much joy to the community,” she said.

“They had so many songs from their childhood days, it was a joy for them to present to the community.

“It was a sharing of music they remembered from their time in different parts of the world, music they could bring here to enrich this community to show the global nature of our local community.”

Dr Krempl said the group’s passion had resulted in some emotional performances.

“I remember being at one of their performances and when a Chinese song was being sung, it attracted Chinese people from around the room who came forward with tears in their eyes and started to sing along,” she said.

“It was almost like a piece of memory from a time gone by, in another country that was here and now.”

Fusion Festival takes place at Mills Park on Friday November 10 from 4pm to 9pm.
