Serpentine Jarrahdale residents rally against proposed rate hikes of 5 per cent

SERPENTINE Jarrahdale residents rallied last Sunday to protest a proposed rates hike of 5 per cent.

Cardup resident Karina Baker organised the rally, a petition for council, and an online petition to be given to Darling Range MLA Tony Simpson.

Mrs Baker said the Shire spent 16.45 per cent of its operating expenditure on governance while Armadale spent just over 4 per cent, according to figures on the MyCouncil website.

“The past two years, rates have increased 3 per cent each year,” Mrs Baker said.

The rally was held at Byford IGA with a free sausage sizzle offered by owner Steven Lenz.

The Shire has a differential rating system, with rates in each category proposed to rise 5 per cent.

This would take the minimum residential rate to $1102.

Residents have until 5pm Friday to lodge submissions on the proposed rates.
