Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale looking for dangerous intersections fix

Ben SmithComment News

THE Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale say they are taking action to address two dangerous intersections in Oakford.

The RAC recently named the Nicholson and Thomas Roads and Abernethy and Hopkinson Roads intersections among the top 10 riskiest intersections in the state.

Funding was not allocated to either intersection in the recent State Budget, but Shire chief executive Kenn Donohoe said improving safety at the intersection was paramount.

He said Main Roads WA were already devising an upgrade plan for the Nicholson and Thomas Roads intersection.

“Different options, including installing a roundabout, are being developed to alleviate congestion and improve safety,” he said.

Mr Donohoe said the Abernethy and Hopkinson roads intersection was set to be absorbed by the future Tonkin Highway extension, but they were investigating short-term fixes in the meantime.

“The intersection of Abernethy and Hopkinson is intended to be closed and incorporated into the planned extension of Tonkin Highway to South Western Highway,” he said.

“However, safety remains an immediate priority which is why we’re investigating the potential to acquire funding through State and Federal Black Spot programs.”

He said the region’s growth meant the Shire was looking into ways to safely accommodate the increased vehicles.

“Ensuring infrastructure keeps pace with this growth is challenging, but it’s something we’re proactively addressing so that all road users can commute safely,” he said.
