TWO local schools have big plans after they received more than $10 million in funding in the recent State Budget.

Southern River College ($8.4 million) and Canning Vale College ($2 million) both received funding in the budget.

Southern River College principal Everal Miocevich said they were “thrilled” and the planned renovations would emphasize their focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), sport and the arts.

“It’s an old school which needed some improvements and this has really helped to fit with where we’re going with our focus on STEM and sports and the arts,” she said

“We’re going to do a complete upgrade of our existing science and stem room, that will include engineering classrooms being established, which will be fantastic.

“There will be a new auditorium space allowing for lectures to occur as well and we’ll be converting our old gym into a performing arts area.

“As a result of that, there will be a new gym and court facilities at the front of the school which will allow for a full size gym.”

Mrs Miocevich said she the funding had been overdue and they were looking forward to improving the school.

“It’s definitely a bit overdue, since I’ve been here in 2011, we’ve been trying to get improvements and upgrades so it’s nice to see that finally happen,” she said.

Canning Vale College principal Peter Rudrum said the funding would allow them to improve student services.

“We’re in the initial stages of planning a new, purpose built Student Services Centre, which will free up classroom space,” he said.

“It will enable us to better meet the health and wellbeing needs of our students with youth support officers, chaplains and engagement coordinators in the one location.”

Mr Rudrum said they would also build extra hard sports courts for basketball and netball.
