IT is not every day a teacher gets to play a gig with a student, but that is what will happen when garage punk band Hussy plays alongside psychedelic prog-rock outfit Yomi Ship.
The two bands, who are playing alongside Fuzz Toads, boast a Southern River College connection, with Hussy lead guitarist Blair Pasco a teacher and Yomi Ship bassist Jade Champion a student at the school.
Pasco said she had been a big fan of her pupil’s music for a while and she was mostly excited to share a stage with her student.
“She (Jade) mentioned she came down and watched Hussy play at the State of the Art festival last year,” she said.
“I got talking to her about it and she said ‘I’ve started playing with this band, Yomi Ship’ and I said ‘Let me know when you’re playing and I’ll come and watch’.
“It is a bit exciting; it’s also a little bit nerve-racking as well. When you’re playing for strangers, you don’t care what they think but with friends I want them to like it.”
Champion said her band had been looking forward to playing with Hussy for a long time.
“We were offered to put together our own line-up and thought Hussy would be a great choice. When Ms Pasco and her other band members came to one of our previous gigs, they said that they’d love to play a show with us one time and now it’s happening,” she said.
“She has always been an awesome teacher, but the fact that she’s in a really good band and is supportive of my interest in music makes her even cooler.”
Fuzz Toads, Yomi Ship and Hussy play Mojo’s Bar in Fremantle on Wednesday, June 14.
