Termite talk in Roleystone to help property owners prevent damage

Tim SlaterComment News

TERMITES have been the scourge of property owners for many years, causing untold damage to buildings everywhere.

But property owners can hear how the damage they cause can be prevented by good property design and maintenance at next week’s Roleystone Organic Growers meeting.

Systems Pest Management owner David Piggott will explain how to identify different species and use a non-toxic, ecosystems approach to controlling the insects.

“Some termites may cause structural damage to susceptible homes and buildings,” he said.

“But others are just doing their job by breaking down tough plant fibres and recycling dead and decaying trees into new soil and are just not interested in houses.

“These social subterranean colonial insects are vital to the health of our forests and soil systems.

“But we don’t want destructive ones damaging our house timber and precious contents.”

The meeting will be held on Wednesday October 12, at 7.30pm at the Roleystone Family Centre on 19 Wygonda Road.

It will be the group’s last meeting for this year. Entry is $3, for information call Lisa on 9399 2312.
