The trio allegedly gained access to a bakery on Jarrah Road on Sunday night and stole a number of items, smashed a glass panel on a nearby bank door, then went to a service station, assaulted a fuel tanker driver, smashed the window of his truck and attempted to gain entry to the station.

An off duty male Senior Constable tried to apprehend the culprits as they were running away, but was assaulted and is still in Royal Perth Hospital being treated for multiple facial fractures and a broken nose.

WA Police Union President George Tilbury said the assault was “horrific”.

“This officer was off duty, so instead of enjoying his break he was being savagely attacked. This violent attack is despicable,” Mr Tilbury said.

“The offenders have left the Senior Constable with facial injuries so severe he is barely recognisable.”

The investigation is ongoing and further charges may be laid.
