Warning to hang up on scam callers

The callers sound urgent, saying computers have viruses and will lose data, or saying residents are about to have services disconnected.

They ask residents to turn on their computers and allow them remote access, or tell them to log onto a website that allows the caller access.

People who comply risk identity theft.

Residents should be wary of legitimate-sounding names and never let unknown third parties access their computers.

They should also regularly scan computers with up-to-date virus detection programs.
