Witness grasses up suspect

The brand-new Anzac Park at The Glades estate is complete with a memorial featuring the names of 320 local servicemen lost to war.

Many community members took part in preparing the park for Anzac Day.

Station officer-in-charge Mike Newman said on March 14, a witness called to say they had seen a man loading the lawn into a Holden Commodore and driving off, and supplied a registration number.

Police investigated and searched a Byford home, where they found the lawn laid in the backyard.

Their inquiries with the occupant led them to identify a suspect, a 36-year-old Brookdale man.

The man is due to appear at Armadale Magistrates Court later this month charged with stealing.

Restitution of $700 is being sought to replace the lawn.

Without the valuable assistance of the member of the public this would not have had a successful outcome, Senior Sergeant Newman said. It sends a strong message from the community that they are prepared to engage with their local police in an effort to assist them in detecting and reducing crime, for which we are grateful.
