Nevertheless, as a nation we cannot have an open door approach towards anyone claiming asylum.

They must be checked for security and disease and processed to see if they are who they say they are.

The agreement that Australia signed 60 or 70 years ago was in a different era and is outdated to what the world is today. A new 2014 agreement is required that gives us and other countries who want to help the final say on how and who is accepted.

India is a safe country, overcrowded maybe, but those who came on boats on their journey passed other countries where asylum could have been sought.

Yet was it that Australia was known under Labor as a true open-door nation.

Will Senator Sarah Hanson-Young be going to Gaza where each day lives are lost and where those people really do need assistance?

Or will she continue to make political assessments about countries she has and probably will never visit to seek the truth about what’s really going on.
