Government sprinklers waste the most water

Greg Wilton, BeckenhamComment News

IN the article Desalination now main water supply, Comment News, October 11, it stated that the Water Corporation requests we watch our usage of water for the garden.

I find it rather ironic that during this extended winter, the biggest abusers of water have been government bodies.

How many parks and gardens do we see being watered (automatic sprinklers) when it is raining?

I informed Belmont council on one occasion that this was happening and they informed me the area of concern, Great Eastern Highway, belonged to Main Roads.

The airport, which has had a multi million-dollar road upgrade and planting of natives, also fell foul of this practice.

I thought the reason to plant natives was to conserve water.

Maybe these departments could take heed of what the Water Corporation is requesting of the general public.

They may argue that it is bore water that is being used, but isn’t all water precious to this dry state?

Maybe water-sensitive timers could be used.
