The position of mayors and councillors were voluntary positions up until a few years ago and the level of service was of a very high standard.
Paying these people has not raised the standard of community commitment.
What’s more, most of today’s councillors have other sources of income.

Tell that to the ratepayers who earn the basic wage and who will foot the bill.
It is time that the politicians moved to have annual CPI-linked increases to be capped to the basic wage.
