Opinion: Senate shame

Derek Pearce, KelmscottComment News

SENATE SHAME

SHAME on those who sit in the Senate and peddle their votes as bargaining chips to advance their political agenda and gain costly concessions on matters unrelated to the Bill before the House.

Surely this is abuse of proper parliamentary process, at best political opportunism and at worst a form of extortion; all of which should be roundly condemned, the latter being a criminal offence in other instances.

Is not the Senate intended to be the House of Review, where a Bill is examined on its merits and dealt with accordingly; or with amendments proposed to enhance the proposed legislation for the benefit of the nation?

Because of the focus of those who hold the balance of power, the current Senate scenario is making just and proper Government of this great nation extremely difficult.
