I HAVE read of the problems associated with asking to check customers’ bags as they leave a store.
While visiting the Philippines I found a very simple and totally inoffensive way to avoid this, and wonder why it has not been taken up here.
On leaving the checkout, you pass a desk where your bag can be heat-sealed.
In the centre aisles of the mall, near the entrance, there is a desk where you can have sealed in a clear plastic bag any other items you bring into the mall.
