State matter

Staff ReporterComment News

RECENT coverage in the local press relating to Serpentine-Jarrahdale Shire stated that the Shire President referred to ‘representatives from the Shire and key stakeholders will travel to Canberra to showcase the shire’s many priority projects and initiatives requiring funding and support’.

I could be wrong but I was always under the impression that shires/councils in WA are the third tier of government, whose mandate and operations are governed by the West Australian Local Government Act 1995.

In other words they have a responsibility to the State Government and should therefore state their case for ‘priority projects and initiatives requiring funding and support’ to the Minister for Local Government in Perth, not Canberra.
