Aussie Rules games follow holy month

WA Football Commission hosted the round-robin competition at Tom Bateman Reserve to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, the holiday marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

Teams from Australian Islamic College’s Thornlie, Kewdale and Dianella campuses, Langford Islamic College, Al-Hidayah Islamic School and Damla College competed for the Cup.

West Australian Football Commission multicultural trainee Bella Ndayikeze said more than 200 students came together to celebrate the occasion.

“AFL is a vehicle to create friendships and break cultural barriers,” she said.

“Participants had a great time, the event saw some very talented individuals and some outstanding skills from females and males. “There was acceptance of cultures and respect gained for the girls from the boys. “For the Islamic schools, many of the participants are not familiar with AFL, so the Eid Cup introduced them to a sport ingrained in Australian culture and all the fun that it can offer.” Winning teams AIC DianellaYears 6/7 boysYear 6/7 girlsYear 4/5 boys AIC KewdaleYear  4/5 girls
