Ben SmithComment News

THORNLIE Cricket Club enjoyed a strong end to the calendar year with three wins from four on the final weekend of action.

Although the fourth grade side was unable to claim victory, the One Day A, D and F sides walked away with wins.

Fourth grade batted first against Hilton in a one-day game, and despite an opening stand of 41, the Lions began to lose wickets at regular intervals and despite Aubz Labrooy’s 52, Thornlie was bowled out for 140.

It started positively in defence of its total, reducing the visitors to 4-51, until a fifth wicket partnership of 59 runs put the game to bed as the visitors finished 6-175 from its 40 overs.

The One Day A side travelled to Forrestdale and batted first, taking control from the onset thanks to Glen Moore’s 79.

Ably supported by Jack Horner (34), Moore spearheaded the effort as the Lions reached 5-200 at inning’s end, before bowling out the opposition for 131.

Ryan Beattie (4-8) was the pick of the bowlers, while Cris Bayliss (2-29) and Iffam Samidon (1-28) also made handy contributions.

After the One Day D side were sent into bat by Forrestdale, they never looked in trouble after an opening stand of 60.

They finished 7-242 from 40 overs, powered by Scott Cooper’s 75 and captain Simon Smith’s 43 and some brilliant bowling ensured a superb victory, bowling out their opponents for 47 in the 19th over.

Dave Kleyweg did the damage, taking 5-10 off 8 overs and Bryan Williams (2-6 off 3 overs) was also important.

The Lions’ One Day F side travelled to Kwinana and took control after batting first, reaching 6-199 off 35 overs.

Brad Simpson led the way with a fine 81, and was backed up by captain Calvin Ridley (32) and Kevin Crudeli (23).

The Lions continued the pressure with the ball and dismissed the home side for just 50 in the 24th over, as Raj Silva (4-6 off 4.3 overs), Trevor Bennett (3-13 off 7 overs) tore through the opposition.
