BECKENHAM Angels mother-daughter pair Jessica and Felicity Lindquist share the field and the futsal court, but now they are also sharing national team selection.
Jessica won a call-up to the national team heading to Spain to compete in the Fustal Women’s World Cup in May, while Felicity will be part of the under-15’s futsal side touring Brazil in November.
The pair form part of Beckenham Angels’ Sunday Premier League squad in the outdoor league, but also play together for South Perth Pumas in the West Coast Futsal Super Liga.
Jessica said she was grateful to play alongside her daughter, despite it presenting a few challenges.
“I’m really proud to have the opportunity to play with her, it’s probably something that doesn’t happen too often and should happen more,” she said.
“Because you’re quite often instructing them what to do, it comes across as a mum voice, rather than a teammate or coach voice, but the benefits far outweigh the negatives.”
She said futsal skills easily translated to the outdoor game.
“It teaches composure on the ball under very close contact and close pressure and in outdoor, when the opposition gets close, people want to give the ball away rather than keeping hold of it and doing something productive.
“Neymar, Messi, Ronaldo, they all credit futsal for their careers because they didn’t play outdoor until they were older.”
Felicity said she was ecstatic when she found out she had been selected to tour Brazil.
“I was pretty pumped, my friend also got selected so I called her up and we were pretty much screaming at each other down the phone for about ten minutes,” she said.
She credited futsal with every aspect of her game.
“I wasn’t the best outdoor player but I started futsal and because it’s so fast, you’ve got to be a lot quicker with your different movements, which translates into outdoor and speeds everything up more.”
