Staff ReporterComment News

Withnell recently started coaching under 12 and under 14 basketballs teams at the Serpentine Jarrahdale Community Recreation Centre, which have been playing in a Friday night competition.

Due to its increasing popularity, she is now hoping to expand the competition.

‘I’m looking for juniors and seniors (adults),’ she said.

‘We’ve had quite a lot of interest, but we’re needing more people so we can establish teams.’

Withnell decided to start a basketball competition in the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale and surrounding areas during the second school term this year, after she realised there were no basketball teams in the area for community members to join.

The competition has been well received by younger residents, with 99 per cent of players returning to play each week.

Once more senior and junior teams are established, Withnell, who used to play basketball in the State Basketball League (SBL) before going on to play college basketball in the US, will also provide interested parents with level 0 coaching certificates.

No prior experience is necessary to start playing basketball.

Training goes for an hour each week.

Junior basketball teams play in a Friday night competition and seniors, once established will play in a Tuesday night competition.
