Rugby union: ARKS breaks through for first Premier Grade win of the season over Coastal Cavaliers

A LEVI Auvae hat-trick inspired ARKS Rugby Union Club to its first Premier Grade victory of the season with a 47-37 win over Coastal Cavaliers at Oakmont Reserve.

Despite missing a raft of key forwards, ARKS ran out to a commanding half time lead, before holding off a determined Cavaliers side in the second half.

ARKS started strongly after Russell Burges crossed for an early and despite being pegged back by two quick penalties, added to their lead when Auvae went over for a converted try.

The visitors continued to dominate proceedings and capitalised on their possession late in the half, as Saula Fifita and Auvae crossed before Elliot Turner’s superb solo effort gave ARKS a deserved 33-9 lead at half time.

AKRS were not as sharp after the break as the Cavaliers scored an early try to give them a glimmer of hope, only for Regan King to re-extend their lead with a converted try up the other end.

The hosts came roaring back and two quick converted tries narrowed the score to 40-37 late in the game.

However, the ARKS players rallied and after a disallowed Cavaliers try in the corner which resulted in a penalty, Auvae grabbed his hat-trick late to put the result beyond doubt.

ARKS reserves fought valiantly but went down 24-14 to their Cavaliers counterparts, who led for most of the match.

Two Cavaliers tries either side of Reon Wynard’s five-pointer gave them a 12-7 lead at half-time, before an injury-hit ARKS conceded another two tries, although a late Michael Robson try made the score-line more respectable.

Injuries once again hurt ARKS third grade side, who battled hard against a rampant Cavaliers side.

Despite finding themselves down 17-0 at the break, second half tries to Alan Wood, Greg Allen and Hira Waikawa saw them work their way back into the game, eventually falling 33-21.
