ARKS Rugby Union Club received a reality check in a 41-20 loss to Southern Lions at Success Field in Round 5 of Championship A Grade.

The league-leading Lions turned up the pressure on ARKS early and put the game to bed in the first half with a flurry of tries.

ARKS held its own in the scrums but lacked dominance at the lineout and were punished by the Lions.

The host’s free-flowing game caused ARKS all sort of problems and the visitors entered halftime scoreless and with a mountain to climb.

ARKS competed strongly in the second half, again fighting a tide of Lions attacks, but finally managed to put points on the board and reduce the deficit.

Cory Piripi-Broughton led the way with 15 points (a try, two conversions and two penalties) while Storm Takuta also crossed for a try.

ARKS’ B Grade side also had a tough loss, losing 51-12 to their Southern Lions counterparts.

The away team started well and matched its more-fancied opponents for the opening quarter of an hour.

However, former ARKS fly half Nathan Lamatoa started to dictate terms in the middle and helped his side shoot out to a big half time lead.

Despite the visitors’ fight, the Lions were able to see out the second half with little worries, despite the valiant efforts of Anthony Russell.

ARKS will be at home next week against Rockingham, with the under-20’s hosting Associates in must-win games.
