Rugby union: ARKS under-10s come close to perfect season

Ben SmithComment News

NOT many teams have achieved a perfect season, but ARKS Rugby Union Club’s Under 10s came pretty close.

The Harrisdale side finished their season undefeated, with an impressive 14 wins from 14 games.

Coach Adam Sutherland admitted he was a bit surprised by their successful season, but delighted to see his charges’ enthusiasm.

“We’ve just been doing the basics properly this year, they’re starting to know what competing is and realising winning is better than losing,” he said.

“They’re at a competitive level now, they want to compete, they want to win and I can only show them how to do it.”

Sutherland, who started coaching the team in Under 8s, said the players’ growth was the most enjoyable thing about dealing with the team.

“Seeing growth in the kids and seeing their development from the start of the year to the end and seeing them grow is great,” he said.

As this was ARKS first season based in Harrisdale, it meant some players were travelling to training twice a week from places as far away as Palmyra and Mandurah.

Adam Viney, whose son plays in the team, said the team were well-coached not just in skill-levels, but their on-field conduct.
