Soccer: 3-0 win puts Gosnells City in good position to claim place in Division 1

Ben SmithComment News

GOSNELLS City took a big step towards securing a place in Division 1 next season with a 3-0 win over Swan United in the first leg of its relegation playoff at Walter Padbury Reserve.

Goals from Elliot Ireland, Wade Farmer and Jordan Parfitt gave Gosnells a comprehensive victory and a massive advantage heading into the second leg tonight.

A good result in the second leg will see them meet either Wanneroo City or Morley Windmills for the last spot in Division 1 next season.

After a tight start to the game, the hosts drew first blood when Tom Gibbons was fouled inside the box and Ireland fired home the resulting penalty.

For long stretches, both sides were unable to create many chances as the defences stood tall against every test they faced.

Swan had a good chance to equalise with 15 minutes to go when Steve Shore fired just over the bar, before Nenulim Charming missed a good chance for Gosnells.

However, Gosnells doubled its lead soon afterwards when Farmer took advantage of a defensive mistake and coolly slotted home.

Parfitt added a third late when Ireland set him up from close range.
