Soccer: Armadale causes NPL WA boilover with 4-0 win over Floreat Athena

Jessica NicoComment News

ARMADALE has caused one of the sporting upsets of the week, demolishing Floreat Athena 4-0 at their home ground.

Floreat Athena has been one of the strongest teams in recent history of the NPLWA but have found themselves struggling in 2018 with just three wins from their first 10 games.

A home game against the second-last Armadale was touted as a good chance for Athena to get a much-needed win on the board, but the visitors were eager to prove they weren’t going to be pushovers.

The floodgates opened early when Armadale captain Nathan Costello volleyed home a cross from teammate Chris Jackson in the 14th minute, before Jackson himself sent a ball past the keeper in the 35th minute to make it 2-0.

The aggressive Armadale could have had another two goals before half-time if not for a couple of great saves from Floreat Athena keeper Jason Saldaris.

The win sees Armadale jump three spots on the NPLWA ladder from 13th to 10th with three wins and three draws from their 10 games.

They next host the fourth-placed Perth Glory from 7pm tomorrow at Alfred Skeet Reserve.
