Soccer: Armadale suffers big 5-0 loss to Floreat Athena

Jessica NicoComment News

ARMADALE Soccer Club had a week they’d like to forget, suffering a big 5-0 NPL WA loss to Floreat Athena just days after being knocked out of the FFA Cup with a 4-0 loss to Cairns.

Saturday afternoon’s game was seventh against eighth and was touted to be much closer, despite Armadale walking away with a 4-0 win the last time the two sides met in round 10.

However a combination of a long cross-country road trip coupled with three games in eight days may have had an impact as Armadale struggled to get into the game early, allowing Floreat to score three times within 25 minutes and effectively seal the win before halftime.

Armadale coach John O’Reilly said he was far from impressed with the team’s display.

“I think the overall performance today was completely unacceptable from the lads,” he said.

“I’m incredibly disappointed. We’ve had a fantastic season and the last thing we want to do now is undo all that good work with performances like this.

“This week in training we need to make sure we put in the yards and effort to get out heads back in the right place.”

The loss saw Armadale slip to eighth on the ladder with three games to go.

They next take on ladder-leading Perth Glory from 3pm August 11 at Alfred Skeet Reserve.
